Actually there is strong evidence that the expansion of the universe is accelerating in the present era, and the mechanism for this acceleration is believed to be very similar to that of inflation. This acceleration, however, is much slower than the acceleration that inflationary models propose for the early universe, so in any case the rapid acceleration of the early universe must have come to an end.
