Scottish geologist whose Principles of
Geology was one of the major scientific books of the 19th Century.
Lyell emphasised gradual geological change over very long periods, as opposed to
the catastrophic models of others thinkers such as Baron Cuvier. This
thinking was important in the formation of Darwins
